Contaminated ground beef finds its way to Utah

An Arizona company is recalling approximately 6.5 million pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Newport, according to the USDA.

The raw, non-intact beef items, including ground beef, were packed between July 26 and September 7, 2018 by JBS Tolleson, Inc. The products being recalled bear the establishment number “EST 267”.

As of October 4, 2018, there are at least 57 confirmed cases in 16 states. Utah has six confirmed cases and four cases that are pending final confirmation.

If you purchased ground beef with that establishment number, throw it away or return it to where it was purchased. If you do not know where your ground beef came from, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food recommends consumers to follow safe food handling procedures, including cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees or higher.

Eating food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis a very common bacterial foodborne illness. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 hours to seven days of eating contaminated food. The illness usually last 4-7 days.
